This Saturday, November 29, 2014, has been designated Small Business Saturday, a day between Black Friday and Cyber Monday to celebrate and support small businesses in our communities. Personally, every day is a “shop small” day in my household. During the holiday shopping season it’s an important reminder to support our local small businesses. Many of our local independents offer specials and events this day and I’ve put together a short list of a few you may want to check out.
In downtown Cary, Gather hosts a party featuring more than ten local men makers, local food truck Chirba Chirba, free beer (yes, you read that right, free beer), a DIY S’more’s Station (yum!) and everything in the shop will be 20% off. And no worries about chilly weather for this event either, because there will be a heated tent in the parking lot so you can shop in complete comfort.
In Durham, Sustain-a-Bull‘s 5th Annual Shop Independent Durham Week kicks off on Small Business Saturday and continues for eight days (through Dec. 7th) at more than 50 locally owned businesses all over town. Special discounts and promotions will help you “keep it local” and the Sustain-a-Bull website event calendar will keep your social agenda filled with fun too. Some of the Shop Independent Durham week specials include discounts and/or giveaways at stores like Barnes Supply Co., Beer Durham (on non-alcohol items), Bull City Craft, Bull City Homebrew, Bull City Running Co. (need any winter apparel?), Cozy, Durham Garden Center, The Glass Jug, Wine Authorities, The Scrap Exchange, The Regulator Bookshop, Parker & Otis, Morgan Imports and many, many more retailers, service providers and restaurants. Find the complete list here.
In Raleigh Shop Local Raleigh kicked off their Instagram contest last weekend, encouraging shoppers to find a miniature version of Sir Walter hidden in participating shops (or on websites), snap a picture then share with the hashtag #WheresWalter and tagging @shoplocalraleigh. Every time you post a picture you gain one entry in the contest. A complete list of participating shops can be found here.
Many downtown Fuquay-Varina businesses celebrate Small Business Saturday too including the newly open Aviator Beer Shop. Now through December 10 shoppers can participate in a special “Cash for Christmas” promotion that includes a chance to win $500 in Downtown Dollars. Find complete details here.
At the northern end of Wake county in downtown Wake Forest shoppers can enjoy an event that will feature special promotions and giveaways. All downtown visitors will be eligible to win a Wake Forest Downtown gift basket that will include gift certificates or items from many of the Downtown establishments. You can fill out a raffle ticket in one of the participating businesses as you are enjoying their charming downtown.
Of course you can shop small all year round and if you’ve been following along these last few posts you’ve bookmarked the Google maps so you’ll know exactly where to find your nearest local, any ol’ time. Happy shopping and thanks for keeping it local!
